Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: Which Should You Choose for Your Engagement Ring?

Jewellove 4 August 2026

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — same carbon, same brilliance. But they are not the same as natural diamonds in every respect. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

The Short Answer

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same chemical composition, physical properties and optical brilliance as natural diamonds. The difference is origin: natural diamonds form over billions of years beneath the earth, while lab-grown diamonds are created in weeks in a controlled laboratory environment.

How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made

There are two methods for creating lab-grown diamonds:

  • HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) — replicates the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep in the earth
  • CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) — builds a diamond atom by atom in a vacuum chamber

Both methods produce genuine diamond crystals that can be cut, polished and certified exactly like natural diamonds.

The Key Differences

Price

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 40–60% less than natural diamonds of equivalent carat and quality. This means you can buy a larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget.

Certification

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds can be certified. Natural diamonds are typically GIA-certified; lab-grown diamonds are typically IGI-certified. Both certificates document carat, colour, clarity and cut.

Appearance

Identical. Even a trained gemologist cannot distinguish a lab-grown from a natural diamond by eye. Specialised equipment is required to tell them apart.

Resale Value

Natural diamonds retain value better over time. Lab-grown diamonds may depreciate more as production technology improves and costs fall. If you view your diamond as an investment or heirloom, natural may be preferable.

Ethics and Environment

Lab-grown diamonds are conflict-free by definition and have a smaller environmental footprint than mined diamonds. However, the mining industry has made significant strides in ethical sourcing — all our natural diamonds are Kimberley Process certified.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose lab-grown if you prioritise size, quality and ethical sourcing for your budget.

Choose natural if you value the rarity, the billions-of-years story, and long-term value retention.

There is no wrong answer. At Jewellove, we offer both and will help you decide honestly — without bias or pressure. Book a consultation at our Blantyre atelier to see both side by side.
